We all have a dream place in our heart, a place where someday we imagine we’ll get married or live out an extraordinary adventure. Venice is one such place in the world, rich beyond question in irresistible allure. It is a city where love, elegance, beauty and mystery naturally interweave to create a timeless poetics. Working as a luxury wedding photographer in Italy, I have the good fortune to cross paths frequently with Venice.
It happened for the wedding of Sylvia and Chris, another perfect day along the lagoon, gleaming white, not a shadow in sight to mar the pearl-like glow. The wedding couple chose to celebrate a location that stands as a symbol of Venice and its history: the Belmond Hotel Cipriani, a realm of infinite vintage charm on the Isle of Giudecca, adorned for the occasion by the outstanding work of the staff at Amber Angel Lion.
The day began very early. Witnessing Venice at dawn is always a surprise, in every season, every kind of light, every context. It is an atmosphere set apart from ordinary time, a moment that perhaps only the total absence of shadows can describe. No sooner had I reached the apartment of the bride than I was immersed in this special kind of white, which suddenly became luminous. Sylvia is perfect. Her life flows like a world inside a magazine, yet today elegance and simplicity combine to create a wedding that changes the nature of light itself, as happens only in springtime.
The boat, the Armenian ceremony with its exchange of crowns, the reception along the Lagoon: every minute seems ripe for shooting a portrait, and so the day ran by. In an instant, it was already midnight and another wedding had become a memory, but my eyes are still full of that Venice, white and ethereal, the ideal setting for this enchanting day.
And yes, of course, there’s also a bit of drama... that will always be part of me!
