Dancers and performers, the traditional costumes of Russia, a leap into the fire hand in hand: this was the marriage of Margarita and Ilya, a splendid Russian wedding on the shores of Lake Como. Here I also had the opportunity to meet again some couples with whom I had worked for, such as Chiara Ferragni and Fedez.
Margarita - who now runs the influencer marketing agency Dazl Media - had always dreamed of getting married in Italy and had her dream come true with an extravagant, eclectic and multiform weekend, right during the summer Solstice. The sumptuous Villa Balbiano - with its flowery gardens and overlooking the lake - did the rest.
Working as a wedding photographer on occasions like this is always a challenge but, at the same time, it allows you to take fantastic images: with Margarita and Ilya it was even easier. From the beginning, I loved their being an extraordinary couple, or out of the ordinary, and their marriage - which was also published by Vogue - was the proof of it. Since the rain accompanied us up to 10 minutes before the ceremony and then stopped, we had a good dose of luck and serendipity ...!
Margarita and Ilya wanted something that was more than a marriage and they built it from the details. For example, from the initials of their names, I + M, from which the weekend tag-line was born, "IM IN LOVE"; the Design Anarchy by Design Anarchy Studio in Italy staff thought about the rest.
The first day – the wedding’s eve – was dedicated to their origins, to the great mother Russia with the feast of Ivan Kupala, the ancient Slavic rite of purification and love: according to the old Russian tradition, on the summer solstice people stage flamboyant celebrations centered on purification, fertility and joy.
The next evening was the wedding. Ilya arrived at the ceremony in a hydroplane, while Margarita made her own grand entrance on a traditional “Lucia”, a row boat that had been lavishly decorated by the floral designer Vincenzo D’Ascanio. As requested by the dress code, guests - from over 20 countries - wore fantastic traditional clothes, while the fires of San Giovanni, the most famous fireworks on Lake Como, fired a few meters from the Villa, contributed to the scenography.
Margarita and Ilya were engaged during Burning Man, the most extravagant glamor festival that takes place every year in Nevada: and only Burning Man could be the start of such a spectacular story.SEE MORE ON VOGUE
